Former DePaul coach Ray Meyer, a Basketball Hall Of Fame inductee and owner of 724 career wins, has passed away at the age of 92.
Myer’s DePaul teams went to two Final Fours, and won the NIT in 1945 (back when that tournament was a far more revered competition than today) with George Mikan playing center.
I literally wept like a baby at the bar when Greg Gumbel announced it before the Michigan St “game”. The ’79 Final Four was my intro to the fabulousity that is NCAA hoops. Plus it was Divorced Dad with Daughter bonding time–completely the stuff of an American Century commercial. Or a bad Steve Martin movie.
Anyway, RIP Ray.
