6 years, $60 million ($8 million signing bonus) for Drew Brees in New Orleans, the Dolphins send a 2nd round pick to Minnesota in exchange for Daunte Culpepper…but the day’s most exciting bit of QB news, has to the Detroit Lions signing Jon Kitna to a 4 year contract. Because there’s nothing that says “don’t fire the GM” like a competition between Joey Harrington and Jon Kitna.
Kitna’s good, but don’t forget the Lions shoring up the receiving corps — badly decimated by THREE YEARS OF DRAFTING WIDE RECEIVERS WITH THEIR TOP PICK — by adding Corey Bradford on a four-year, $7.3 million deal. He is expected to compete with Scottie Vines and Eddie Drummond for a starting role on the Lions split squad team. That Lions team — quarterbacked by the well-paid backup and consisting of three well-paid backup receivers — will travel to touch- and flag-football events all over Birmingham and Oakland Counties during the season, raising money for Matt Millen’s favorite children’s charity, the Children’s Mustachio Foundation.
I think I started cheering for the Lions because I was charmed by what an unholy mess they are, but this is excessive. Mike Martz is currently running a Quarterbacks Camp, the participants of which are: Kunta Kitna, Harrington, Shaun King and Dan Orlovsky. I hope they have arts and crafts at that “camp.”
