On today’s PTI, shortly after Michael Wilbon said that he’s worried for J.J. Adande’s safety during the World Cup (funny, I didn’t know Lt. Dangle was attending), ESPN’s Tommy Smyth (above) made the following statements :
a) he doesn’t understand how a player making 150 grand a week can be complaining about blisters. Someone let Josh Beckett know that Tommy wasn’t talking about him.
b) he’s picking Italy to win the tournament. If you’re still paying attention, that means that Smyth believes the Azzuri will either win their group (one that includes the Czech Republic and the U.S.) or they’ll be runner-up and will defeat their almost-certain opponent Brazil in the round of 16.
Gianluigi Buffon would like to know if Tommy is ready to put his money where his mouth is.
Tommy hasn’t been wronge yet. as Least he has come out..and nobody else has and picked a winner have you??????????
OK wise guy how did Smyth do you knocked his prediction.Did you also hear him say that Ghana were a very strong team. Did he pick Italy to win the group how wrong could he have been. I see its the fact that he bypassed the US which upset you. Well suck it up and blow it out just like your rantings.
Actually, I didn’t hear Tommy pick Italy to win the group. He said they’d win the World Cup. And with all due respect to Mr. Smyth and the Azurri, there’s more football to be played!

Assuming your fact-checking skills are better than your grammatical chops, please, do me a favor and cite any passage in CSTB where I said the U.S. would a) even earn a point in this competition or b) knocked anyone for downplaying their chances.
OK guys get over it. Smyth was spot on the money. Ghana were a strong team Italy did win the group. Italy did win the Worls Cup. Just because Smyth understands soccer better than most Americans is no reason to hate the guy.
Its time to give Tommy some love.
