Writes Ben,
While honoring the Red Sox today at the White House, President Bush — most likely because I was watching at lunch — revealed that VP Dick Cheney is a f’n Cub fan. Add him to Rumsfeld, Denny Hastert, George Will, the GOP-centric “Chicago Tribune” op-ed page, the Trib Co’s ongoing war with Mayor Daley … and the Cubs are the most right wing team in baseball. Looking forward to Tom Metzger tossing out the first pitch this season,
(did someone say something about an Evil Empire?)
Yes, of course, Ben, the Cubs have some right-wing rooters. But keep in mind that freedom loving Cubs crazies include….Hillary Clinton….Dennis DeYoung…ok, that’s it. Feel free to kill yourself.
I think the band Chicago might be Cubs fans, but they’re probably too busy watching Blue Demons basketball.
STYX most certainly are SOX fans, as is Mayor Daley…
re : Styx. I can’t comment on Tommy Shaw, but Dennis DeYoung must be a White Sox fan the same way Phil Collins used to be a QPR fan. Which is to say, singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” at Wrigley is a funny way of showing it. And hard to listen to, as well.
Well, it might have been a little too Moveon.org to compare Bush and Metzger (although they both like Confederate Flags and discourage black voters), but it’s just a little disconcerting to see that so much of the Iraq War was planned by bleacher bums.
Anyway, as far as the Cubs and their musical fan base, it’s hard to top Billy Corgan, of The Bozo Big Top Band and at least two others.
Ben

1. Styx are southsiders. Loyalties die hard but
2. Wrigley probably pays, and the Sox don’t have a similar stupid celebrity sing-a-long thing (they have the incomparable Nancy Faust at the organ).
Albini is a Twins fan.
