Coors or not, you don’t figure Trevor Hoffman to give up a 2-run HR to Clint Barmes (above) in the bottom of the 9th. Particularly with all of the alcoholism and depression in the Barmes clan. All those years of trying to intervene during one or more of patriarch Digger’s “killer drunks” are poor preperation for facing one of baseball’s most accomplished closers, so full credit to Clint.
I’m too busy watching the coronation of Roy Williams to check out “Baseball Tonight”, but I’m pretty sure someone will mention Tuffy Rhodes when talking about Dimitri Young’s career day. 0 HR’s in 46 spring training at bats for Young, by the way. Next year, he and Kaz Matsui can report as late as they want. Though for my money, Jeff Cirillo having a productive afternoon for the Brewers is a much bigger shock.
Shawn Green loafing after a bloop single in the 9th inning of Arizona’s brutal loss to Chicago was noted by both the Phoenix phans and the Arizona TV crew. I don’t know, maybe the game had been dragging on for so long, Green wasn’t sure it hadn’t turned into Saturday?
Mets starter Kris Benson has been placed on the 15 day disabled list. On the bright side, several of our correspondents report that Anna Benson is still the picture of health. There will now be a moratorium on comments about the latter until the first of May. It’s a long season — you’ve gotta pace yourself.
