I don’t have access to the Elias Koteas Sports Bureau today, so I can’t tell you when was the last time Ohio State and Michigan lost on the same Saturday prior to facing each other. But regardless of how Illinois’ upset of no. 1 Ohio State might provide encouragement for the likes of LSU, Kansas or Oklahoma, it’s pretty hard to discount the poise shown by the visitors’ Juice Williams (4 TD’s, 70 yards rushing) facing the nation’s top defense.
Having spent much of my Saturday at the Texas Tech/UT shootout, I didn’t catch one minute of Boise State’s 52-0 rout of Utah State. Nonetheless, let me be the first to say Bill Belichick should’ve pulled his regulars much earlier in the contest.
It’s pretty amazing that Illinois football will have at least eight wins this year and Illinois basketball may be lucky to creep into the NCAA tourney.
Ohio State lost because they failed to heed Bob Griese’s sage-like advice that “the Ohio State defense has to play good defense in order to get back in this game.”
